Red Cross honors teen volunteers

Posted: Updated:

Some coach children in sports. Others work with seniors. All of the teens honored by the American Red Cross as Youth Heroes give of themselves to their respective communities.

The Statesboro Branch of the American Red Cross hosted their first Youth Heroes breakfast and recognized high school and middle school students from their ten county service area.

The ceremony also helped kick off Red Cross' month long Heroes fundraising campaign. In addition to the teens, Red Cross also recognized Chris Yaughn, founder of Fostering Bulloch, as an adult volunteer.

Organizers of the awards hope they inspire other teens to get involved in various causes.

"Hopefully when they see others honored they will think about doing something for others that also makes them feel good," explained Robin Wingate, executive director of American Red Cross' Southeast Georgia chapter.

In addition, WTOC's Dal Cannady served as emcee and was presented with an award of excellence from Red Cross' Southeast U.S. Division for raising money and awareness with his annual fundraising walk.

The teen honorees were:

Joseph Baxter - Tattnall County

Girl Scout Troop "Green Team" - Toombs County

Sarah Ellen Hall - Bulloch County

Ryan Johnson - Jeff Davis County

Kailyn McDuffie - Bulloch County

Luckey Merritt - Bulloch County

Bailey Rucker - Jeff Davis County

Brianne Sneed - Evans County

Auston White - Jeff Davis County
