Ruggerfest kicks off in Matthews on Saturday

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) -


The 11th annual 2014 Carolina Ruggerfest kicked off at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews on Saturday.

Around 40 high school rugby teams will be competing in back to back games on Saturday and Sunday, officials say.

Ruggerfest is one of the first large events to be held at the newly opened Mecklenburg County SportsPlex in Matthews.

Ruggerfest is open to the public.

Officials say there will be back to back games from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The event is hosted by the The North Carolina Youth Rugby Union (NCYRU), a non-profit group that is the governing body for youth rugby in the state.

Admission is five dollars.

Some college rugby games will be played at Butler High School in the evenings as part of Ruggerfest.

    Folks involved in the leadership of southeast Georgia graduated on Saturday.  This is a culmination of different programs throughout the region over 5 months. The program itself helps make business leaders more well-rounded of what's going on in every 10 counties in the Southeast.
