LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Police responded to a fatal car accident early Sunday morning.

Just after 4:30, a woman was hit and killed by the driver of a van headed south on Preston Highway at Pinecroft Drive near Blue Lick Road.

Police said the woman was walking with friends and had just left El Rincon, a Cuban restaurant on Preston Highway, before the accident.

Officer Carey Klain, a spokeswoman for the Louisville Metro Police Department, said the area was dark and the driver of the van could not see the woman.

Officer Klain said the driver stopped the car and called police. The woman's friends also stayed at the scene and talked to officers who responded.

Her friends told police the woman staggered into the roadway before being hit and alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

The coroner pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police do not expect any charges against the driver.
