Ceremony marks 30th anniversary of Celtic Cross

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It is now just one week away from St. Patrick'sDay, and tons of green can already be seen in Savannah.

The Celtic CrossCeremony held Sunday marked the beginning to the festivities as well as the 30thanniversary of the Celtic Cross in Emmet Park and the march to the venerablemonument that takes the Irish not just through the city's heart, but alsothrough the playgrounds of the early immigrants. 

To honor the anniversary, ParadeCommittee Chairman Kevin Halligan convinced the Irish Ambassador to the UnitedStates, Anne Anderson, to join the Celtic cross celebration. 

Festivities this week include Tara Feis in Emmett Park, plus the TybeeIsland Irish Heritage Parade and the Salute to the Grand Marshal next Saturdayat 10 a.m. 

The 2014 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah will step off at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17.

Savannah St. Patrick's Day 2014 events are as follows:

  • March 7 - Greening of the Fountain, Forsyth Park, 12 noon
  • March 9 - Celtic Cross Ceremony 
  • March 14 - Irish Heritage Dance, Alee Temple, 8 p.m. 
  • March 14-17 - St. Patrick's on the River Festival
  • March 15 - Saint Patrick's Day Mass, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 8 a.m. 
  • March 15 - Tara Feis, Emmet Park, 11-5 p.m. 
  • March 15 - Tybee Island Parade 3 p.m. 
  • March 16 - Jasper Green Ceremony, Madison Square, 4:30 p.m. 
  • March 17 - 2014 Saint Patrick's Day Parade
