SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Crews responded to multi-vehicle crashes Monday morning on I-16 eastbound in Savannah.

It happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 16 east right at the Dean Forest exit. A total of five vehicles were involved in three separate chain-reaction crashes in the same vicinity. Officials say two people suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital to be checked out.

According to GSP, it all started when one car rear-ended a tractor trailer, causing a third car to rear-end a fourth car, and then a fifth car came along and reared-end those two cars.

Pooler Fire and police, GSP and Savannah-Chatham Metro all responded to the crash.

One of the eastbound lanes of I-16 was closed for over an hour, backing up traffic and causing major delays for motorists until around 10 a.m.

The wreck has since been cleared and traffic is back to normal.
