St. Helena woman held on homicide by child abuse charges

ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Bond has not been setyet for a St. Helena Island woman who faces homicide charges.

Laquana Chisolm, 26, turnedherself in Friday night after Beaufort County sheriff's deputies charged herwith homicide by child abuse, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

She appeared before amagistrate judge the next morning but due to the fact that her charge carries apossible life sentence, bond can only be set by a circuit judge.

Investigators say Chisolmstruck a toddler Phylicia Garry, 2, with a dumbbell on Feb. 4 at her seasidehome and failed to report it. Phylicia was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospitaland then airlifted to Medical University of South Carolina for her injuries. Twodays later, she died from severe head trauma.

There is no officialword yet on when Chisolm will appear in general sessions court. Chisolm remainsat the Beaufort County Detention Center.
