Friends of Bluffton Dog Park must build on different location

Posted: Updated:
BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

There are more troubles for the Friends of Bluffton Dog Park.

After recouping the funds embezzled by a former member, they learned the land on Buckwalter Parkway where they were planning to build their dog park is no good.

Now, they'll have to look elsewhere.

The group had started clearing 1.5 acres of this property for the new park, but in January, the county assessed the area and found that it is too wet and has too many mosquitoes.

Because of the health hazards for both humans and dogs, the group cannot move forward with building the dog park at that location.

Now they are planning to revert back to the original location which is towards the northern part of Buckwalter Regional Park.

That location was part of an agreement signed between the group and the county back in 2011.

But that park would back up to Mill Street, which is part of a residential neighborhood called The Farm, and people there said they don't want a dog park right behind their homes.

"I don't think anyone's against dogs, but not in their own backyard. I'm sure there's going to be smells from the dog park and noise from the dog park. It just needs to be someplace other than a residential area," said resident Bill Weaver.

The county said they will take into account the neighborhood's concerns before making a decision.

The Friends of the Bluffton Dog Park will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
