SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah Fire crews responded to a fire at Frazier Homes in Savannah early Tuesday.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. in an apartment unit at Frazier Homes on Emerald Drive in between MLK Jr. Blvd. and May St. Officials say that when fire crews arrived they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of a lower unit apartment.

A family of three lived in the unit and all made it out safely. The unit above was evacuated as well.

Savannah Fire crews have the flames out and are monitoring hot spots. The unit where the fire originated is destroyed and at least one other unit suffered heavy smoke damage. Officials say they believe the fire started in the kitchen located towards the back of the unit. However, that has yet to be confirmed and fire investigators will be out first thing Tuesday to try and determine an exact cause.

No traffic was affected and the scene should be cleared by around 8 a.m.

The Red Cross has been called to help those affected.
