SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Savannah Fire crews responded to a fire at Frazier Homes in early Tuesday morning.

It happened at about 5:30 a.m. in an apartment unit at Frazier Homes on Emerald Drive in between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and May Street. Officials said that when fire crews arrived, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of a lower unit apartment.

A family of three lived in the unit and all made it out safely. The unit above was evacuated as well.

"Flames were coming out of the windows, things were falling, debris was everywhere. Smoke was billowing from the roof," said Miah Jones, who lives next door.

The unit where the fire originated is destroyed and at least one other unit suffered heavy smoke damage.

Officials said they believe the fire started in the kitchen located towards the back of the unit. However, that has yet to be confirmed and fire investigators will be out first thing Tuesday to try and determine an exact cause.

"[It's] just sad. [I've] got to start back over again," said Shaquita Harris, who lived in the house.

No traffic was affected and the scene was  cleared by at about 8 a.m.
