Study shows Chatham County labor force lacking in soft skills

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Local agencies received a report Tuesday that showed thelocal work force is lacking in computer skills, as well as better or moreforklift operators, welders and machinists.

The long-awaited study was conducted by Armstrong AtlanticState University with focus groups and interviews over the past year.

The study also showed high wages resulted in better recruitingsuccess. Eighty percent of those who participated cited problems with the laborsupply versus problems with demand.

"I think that we have some soft skill issues we need toaddress, to tackle, whether it is getting to work on time, working well withco-workers, communicating skills, verbal skills," said Trip Tollison with theSavannah Economic Development Authority. "These things can be addressed but itcan't just be one institution, it needs to be a community wide effort."

The barriers in education and training were also consideredsignificant in the study.
