Beaufort County Treasurer not seeking re-election

Posted: Updated:

After stepping out of retirement to serve as Beaufort County's Treasurer, Douglas Henderson has announced Wednesday he will not seek re-election after serving for four years.

Henderson is throwing his support behind his Deputy Treasurer, Maria Walls, who announced her candidacy the same day.

Douglas Henderson said he has been able to restore the public's trust in the Treasurer's Office. He believes his Deputy Treasurer will continue to carry out that promise to taxpayers.

"By the end of my term, I will have accomplished all the goals that I set for myself and this office," he said.

The Beaufort County Treasurer's Office came under fire back in 2010 when an employee embezzled more than $200,000.

A judge sentenced that employee, Casaundra White, to 13 months in prison and ordered her to repay all of the stolen money.

Under Henderson's leadership, the Treasurer's Office now has a more strict checks and balances system and his Deputy Treasurer said there's more to be done.

"It's a great feeling, I don't think we're finished and so I'm excited to have the opportunity to continue what he and I have envisioned for this office together and as individuals," said Maria Walls.

As for Henderson, he said he's looking forward to retirement. Again.

"This is my fourth attempt at retirement at the end of this term," he laughed.

Henderson's last day as Beaufort County's treasurer will be June 30 , 2015.
