SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Organizers for the annual "Geaux Bald" event to benefit charity have increased their fundraising goal to after surpassing their initial expectation.

As of Friday morning, $30,000 had been raised. But by the afternoon, donations blew through that mark and coordinators increased their goal to $40,000.

"Well I lost most of my hair already to alopecia, an autoimmune disease," said Hannah Hoffman, 23, a first year physical therapy student at LSUHSC. I just can't imagine what it would feel to be a child battling cancer and losing all my hair at the same time. It's hard enough for me just to lose my hair so that's why I did it."

Medical students at LSU Health are hosting the event for the second year in a row. The funds will go to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a charity that raises funding for childhood cancer research.

Last year, the first year for Geaux Bald in Shreveport, had 15 people sign up to shave their heads and the group raised about $9,000.

Geaux Bald President Taylor Conrad said he hopes the group can raise even more money at this year's event. As of Friday morning, 60 people had signed up to get their heads shaved.

The event is held at the BRI Atrium at LSU Health Shreveport near the medical school at 1501 Kings Hwy. It runs from 2 to 6 p.m.
