SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A preliminary investigation suggests that a 66-year-old Springfield man, driving a 2007 Ford Edge struck 55-year-old Zoraida Moctezuma Wednesday while she was walking on the sidewalk near the Boston Road Jiffy Lube Station.

The driver dragged her a short distance underneath the car before realizing what had happened.

Moctezuma was transported to Baystate Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

While Springfield police generally handle death investigations within the city, state police are overseeing this investigation because of a familial relationship between one of the city's officers and someone involved in the accident.

State police assumed the lead in the investigation at the request of the Hampden County District Attorney's Office.

The driver has not been identified in the ongoing investigation. At this point no criminal charges have been filed.
