SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Shreveport business is making a generous gesture to help pay final respects to a woman who died tragically earlier this week

Julia Bay, 59, was struck and killed by a van March 12 as she rode her motorized scooter near the intersection of Jordan Street and Creswell Avenue.

Heavenly Gates Funeral Home wants to help Bay's family, which includes only her 75-year-old husband who was hospitalized at the time of the accident. Bay did not have insurance, and the funeral home is trying to raise $1,500 for her cremation.

The driver of the van, Charlie Patero, 46 of Shreveport, was headed south on Creswell Avenue and turning onto Jordan Street at the time of the collision, police said. They do not believe he was drunk, but toxicology tests were run as required by law. They do not expect charges to be filed against him.

The accident is still under investigation.

To find out how you can help, call 318-222-8010 or visit the funeral home at 1339 Jewell St.
