U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham wants to help Savannah Ports

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

South Carolina's senior United States Senator, Lindsey Graham, thinks the Palmetto State should help Georgia deepen the Savannah Ports.

This is huge, especially since South Carolina Legislature has been against helping Savannah for quite sometime.

Graham said you can't help Charleston without helping Savannah.

President Barak Obama's 2015 budget did not include funding that would deepend the Savannah Harbor from 42 to 47 feet.

Sen. Graham said he'd like to see Charleston's port go to 50 feet, and he'd also like to get a new terminal in Jasper County.

He would like that project to be a joint venture between South Carolina and Georgia.

Jasper County leaders have been fighting for years to get a terminal built on their side of the Savannah River.

Graham said this all can happen if his state and Georgia work together.

He has a bill for $18 billion dollars that can go towards deepening all of the East Coast ports and helping the ports on the West Coast as well.

"To the people who believe that we can get everything we want in South Carolina, and other people never get anything, that's not the way it works," said Graham. "So there will be some help to Savannah coming, and I'll be supportive of that."
