SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Talmadge Bridge has reopened after a head-on collision closed north and soundbound lanes for several hours.

A Savannah man was listed in critical condition Friday night after the car he was driving collided with an SUV on the Back River Bridge. The driver of the car had to be cut out of his car and he was transported to Memorial.

John David Maney, 54, of the 100 block of Stafford Road, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center after the 7:06 p.m. collision.

He was driving a silver Ford Escort south on U.S. 17 toward the Talmadge Memorial Bridge when the Escort crossed the center line and collided with a Ford Explorer SUV being driven northbound by a Savannah woman.

A third car that the Escort had struck earlier was following it when the collision occurred on the bridge.

The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department continues to investigate the collision of the Escort and Explorer.
