St. Patrick's Day weekend DUI arrest numbers released

Preliminary results from a statewide DUI enforcement saturation effort show law enforcement made more DUI arrests this weekend than at this time last year.

The Arizona Governors' Office of Highway Safety released the numbers on Sunday. The release compared DUI statistics gathered on Friday and Saturday to numbers gathered last year on March 15 and 16.

Law enforcement made 977 more traffic stops in Arizona this weekend than during the St. Patrick's Day holiday weekend last year. There were also 481 more participating officers and deputies on DUI patrol than this time last year.

Police also made 233 DUI arrests over the weekend, compared to 212 last year. There were also 81 extreme DUI arrests so far this weekend, versus 56 extreme DUI arrests last year.

The increased DUI enforcement started on Friday, March 14 and will continue through St. Patrick's Day on Monday, March 17.

Final holiday DUI arrest results are expected by Tuesday, according to the Office of Highway Safety.
