SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Members of the Sinn Fein Society got a head start on festivities on Monday morning at their 49th annual annual St. Patrick's Day breakfast at the Savannah Golf Club.

"We come in and green up the grits for everybody. We have the surgeon general here. He tests them and makes sure we can eat them and we can survive, so that's why we're here," said Hugh Coleman, president of the Sinn Fein Society.

The society was founded in 1965. It began with just 33 members and as the Irish families grew, so did the organization. While this breakfast is steeped in tradition, there's no mistaking the purpose of the gathering: to have a good time.
