SCHP investigates fatal wreck on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash overnight on William Hilton Parkway and Shelter Cove Lane in Hilton Head where one person has died.

Troopers responded to the wreck around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and say a male driver was traveling westbound on U.S. 278 near Shelter Cove when he veered off the road and struck a tree.

SCHP Cpl. Sonny Collins says the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed. He also says a female passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was injured badly. That passenger had to be flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Her condition is still unknown.

U.S. 278 westbound was closed to traffic for a couple of hours, but re-opened to traffic at 5 a.m.

The crash is still under investigation and the names of the victims are being withheld pending family notification.
