Cleanup crews out in full force in downtown Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Massive cleanup efforts from the annual St. Patrick's Day festival have begun in downtown Savannah.

Crews have been out overnight trying to get the downtown area cleaned up after this weekend's annual festival and parade. Street sweepers were out on River Street in the early morning hours Tuesday, and for the most part, have that area cleaned up.

It's a different story in Ellis Square and City Market. Trash could still been seen overflowing from trash bins and littered across the area early Tuesday morning. Some staging areas still need to be broken down as well. Several work crews arrived in City Market around 6 a.m. to get started, and are working hard to get everything cleaned up and back to normal in that area.

Thousands visited Savannah over the weekend for the 190th Savannah Saint Patrick's Day parade and festival, and it appears by the looks of the downtown area early Tuesday morning, the rainy weather did not damper the St. Patrick's Day spirit in the Hostess City that so many have grown to love and anticipate each and every year.

At this time, River Street and Bay Street are clear. All roads should be open except for on River Street where some of the ramps will remain closed until Tuesday afternoon as crews finish cleanup.
