SCMPD Traffic Unit officers evaluate St. Patrick's Day tactics

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

St. Patrick's Day has come and gone. Now officers with the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept. Traffic Unit are looking at what worked and what didn't.

Because St. Patrick's Day fell on a Monday this year, it created a four day festival.

Lt. Anthony Gallo said the downtown area saw the heaviest traffic influx on Saturday.

"We did the best we could trying to manage it," said Gallo. "Sometimes we've tried leaving it alone to see what happens. We've tried having officers in the intersections putting the traffic through. It's hard because there is really nowhere to put in the traffic, it just goes around."

Lt. Gallo did say officials increased traffic signals to try to ease some of the congestion during the busy St. Patrick's Day weekend.
