ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Cancer of Coalition of South Georgia is joining a national initiative to increase the rate of colorectal cancer screening.

About 60% of Americans over 50 get screened. The Georgia rate is about 70%. The Cancer Coalition wants to increase the national rate to 80% by 2018.

"We are excited to have a voice of this community on that national scale because we do represent a population that does have a lot of barriers to overcome," said Communications Director Casey Perkins.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.
