SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah City Council held a workshop Thursday to discuss updates on the city's emergency management plan and revisions to the city's tree protection ordinance.

Emergency Management Director Dan Stowers said a new initiative they are doing this year is reaching out to local faith based organizations to be included in the city's emergency plans. These organizations could help stock supplies and resources in the event of a disaster.

Emergency management officials are also reaching out to neighborhood associations to get more folks involved in their summer training classes that educate citizens on first aid, CPR and other techniques that could be vital during an emergency.

City Council also heard from city officials proposing changes to the city's tree ordinance. The first change being the name of the ordinance which is now the Landscape and Tree Protection Ordinance. Revisions also include adding a new category of trees called Specimen Trees.

They also are proposing to create stricter consequences if a developer tears down a tree without the city's permission.
