Traffic signal, paving work continues in Beaufort

Posted: Updated:

More road construction and traffic signal work is scheduled for the city of Beaufort.

Starting Tuesday, new traffic signal masts will be installed along Charles Street over the next two weeks. Crews will be setting new traffic signal poles along Charles Street at Boundary and Craven streets. During the work, there will be temporary closures of some side streets. The work is scheduled to start Tuesday.

Also starting Tuesday crews start directional boring work under the pavement, which will continue over the next two weeks. Depending on where they need to set their boring rig, they may need temporary permission from adjacent property owners because of the lack of right-of-way, according to the city. The boring work will allow electrical line conduits to be run under the pavement.

The plans call for the contractor to bring a second drill rig to handle the Charles and Bay Street traffic mast foundation. While they drill the foundation, it block to the adjacent dentist parking lot near the pavilion entrance to the Waterfront Park.

City leaders will coordinate with downtown retailers and Main Street Beaufort USA if alternative parking arrangements are needed during this traffic signal installation.

Ribaut Road between North Street and Bay Street will be limited one lane in each direction Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for paving work.

North Street paving will continue Friday from Carteret to Bladen Street.

Charles Street was patched, paved and striped Wednesday and Thursday and is open to traffic.
