The new Effingham County jail will soon open. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Sunday outside the new facility.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said the $18.4 million project that covers the jail and the sheriff's office is long awaited. The new jail has 332 beds.

The sheriff showed off their new central control system that will keep the inmates and staff safe. There are 92 cameras in the building. The sheriff is also working on a CERT team to help with any emergency.

There will be a full medical staff, isolation cells, maximum security cells and a padded cell. There are three inmate classifications they can use.

The sheriff says the facility's opening comes at the perfect time.

"We don't have to go fixing a bunch of stuff right off the bat. That has been good thing. We lost two boilers and those are $18,000 a piece. We are having to move inmates now because we are not buying new boilers on the old jail, which means every night we have to move 40 inmates to other side for showers. Now the excess use is wearing out the shower heads and spigots are breaking off. It's a good time," McDuffie said.

The ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday. They will hold an open house from noon-4 p.m. Monday. Then the sheriff's administration offices will closed from Tuesday to Friday for the move.
