BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

The Bluffton community is rallying behind a family who lost a loved one.

On Feb. 15, 9-year-old Leo Vannoni lost his battle with a bone marrow transplant virus.

WTOC reported on Leo in January when the Beaufort County School District offered to help him keep up with his schoolwork through iPad technology.

Leo returned to MUSC to start his new treatment later that month, but he passed away after Valentine's Day.

To help the family during this difficult time, several Beaufort County schools teamed up with community members to host a fund-raiser called Laps for Leo. The areas schools have felt especially connected to the cause because Leo's mother, Kelly, is a teacher at McCracken Middle.

"She's impacted many students, many families and we felt it was our turn to give back to them in their time of need," said event organizer Nicole Mark.

Laps for Leo was held from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at the Bluffton High School track. The community raised money through the $5 dollar admissions, t-shirt and food sales, the silent auction and much more.

All the proceeds will go directly to the family.
