COLUMBIA, SC (WTOC) -

The School Improvement Council of Okatie Elementary School received a statewide honor on Saturday; Port Royal Elementary's School Improvement Council earns honorable mention.

Okatie Elementary SIC earned the 2014 Dick and Tunky Riley Award for School Improvement Council Excellence. Port Royal Elementary's SIC was one four schools to earn honorable mentions.

The awards were presented during the South Carolina School Improvement Council Annual Meeting in Columbia, SC.

The annual Riley Award for SIC Excellence was created in 2002 to recognize the significant contributions made to public education by the nearly 15,000 School Improvement Council members who volunteer in every public school in the state. The award is named in the honor of the former South Carolina governor and U.S. Secretary of Education and his late wife, and recognizes the couple's longstanding commitment to quality public education.
