Ribbon cutting ceremony for new Effingham County jail

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Effingham County jail was held on Sunday.

The ribbon cutting ceremony started at 3 p.m., the jail offered an open house until 5 p.m. Another open house will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Monday. The public is welcome to the open house and take a look inside of the new jail.

The total cost of the jail and Sheriff's Office, including financing, is $18.4 million which came from SPLOST. The jail will have 332 beds.

There are 92 cameras in the building. The sheriff is also working on a CERT team to help with any emergency. 

There will be a full medical staff, isolation cells, maximum security cells and a padded cell. There are three inmate classifications they can use. 

Still to be completed is the Sheriff's Office portion of the project. ECSO will move to the county annex, in the former middle school on Ga. 119, in order to make way for new office space next to the new jail.

The Sheriff's administrative offices will be closed Tuesday through Friday for the move.
