Desoto County leaders change proposed gun ordinance

(WMC-TV) – Desoto County leaders will change a proposed gun ordinance after an outcry from people living in the area.

The Board of Supervisors met Monday to vote on making the change after the original proposal drew opposition from second amendment activists.

People who use the Hernando Desoto River Park in west Desoto County have complained about their safety.

Last month, Action News 5 told you about park goers illegally shooting signs and other homemade targets.

While trying to come up with a solution, leaders proposed changing who is allowed to bring a gun to the park.

The proposed ordinance would have only enabled enhanced carry permit holders to bring firearms onto park property.

Some complained the proposal restricted the safety and rights of those who did not have the permit.

Leaders voted to change the proposal at Monday's special meeting. They will now look to other solutions to keep the park safer.

Action News 5's Michael Clark is talking to both sides about this morning's decision and learning more about what's being proposed to keep folks safer at the park. He'll have the story tonight on Action News 5 at 6.
