Richard Dotson's late wife had no idea what she was starting when she made a helpful suggestion back in 1963.

"I was operating a service station and I was there seven days a week," said Dotson. "My wife told me, you have to take a day off. So, she gave me some golf clubs, and that was it."

Fifty-one years later, Dotson is still playing  four days a week, and two years ago he took over running the Geechee Blitz at Bacon Park.

The leadership role within sports is a familiar one for the captain of Commercial High School's first football team in 1948.

Dotson was also a two-year captain of the school's baseball team and played three years of professional baseball after high school.

"I've always enjoyed working out, athleticism," he said. "I've always liked that. My wife and I both joined the YMCA when it came to Pooler in 1996.''

Dotson has had an even longer and more faithful relationship with the Pooler First Baptist Church.

"I've been a member of my church since I was 13," said Dotson. "But I started going to that church when I was five. So, that's over 75 years.''

A deacon for 40 of those years, the Korean War veteran is also a Mason and a Shriner and works out five days a week in addition to his full golf schedule. So, why all those varied activities?

"If I didn't have that, I'd be in a nut house," Dotson said. "And that's about the size of it."
