Tybee Island prepares for Orange Crush

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Tybee Island is already warning residents and neighboring communities about issues involving traffic with Orange Crush next month.

However, people who live on Tybee also have issues with the weekend; it falls on Easter weekend.

The annual event draws a few thousand university students to the Island, and in the past, seen in multiple YouTube videos, complaints of trash, property abuse and overall disrespect have plagued the beach event at the pier.

Tybee officials said they can't stop it. Some are worried trash left on the beach may disrupt sunrise service. Others just ask people to clean up after themselves.

"If people would just show more respect for the island and the residents, put their trash in the trash cans and show common decency and respect, it wouldn't be so bad and no one would be as opposed to it," said Tybee Island resident Bridget Cook. "Easter is not about dancing on cars and whatever it is that happens that weekend."

"I'm hoping everybody will come down," said Tybee Island resident Pam Smith. "It will be safe, they'll have fun and clean up behind themselves."

The city of Tybee Island is already preparing for the traffic congestion and crowds. They will be narrowing some double lanes onto the island to allow for emergency vehicles to pass whenever it's needed.
