Thieves smash slew of car windows at several Chesterfield gyms

Chesterfield police are working to track down the suspects behind a string of car break-ins at a series of gym parking lots.

Cars in four fitness club parking lots were targeted Sunday afternoon. Each of the cars hit, had its window smashed. A car window was discovered shattered at the Manchester YMCA. Police report electronics were swiped from inside.

Just 30 minutes later, two more cars were reported with smashed windows in the parking lot of the Harbor Point Gold's Gym. Money and other items were missing from the vehicles.

The thefts have left some gym members unnerved.

"People here don't really do that... slightly frightening," said gym member Amber Guilbe.

"It's a pretty safe area, from what I've seen. It's pretty well-lit," added another member, Jim Domroes.

More reports of broken car windows would soon surface. Within the next hour, officers responded to cars with smashed windows at the YMCA near Hampton Park and at the Westchester Commons Gold's Gym. Both money and electronics were reported stolen.

"I kind of feel like in nicer, okay areas... people are like, 'oh, let me break in there, because people have stuff.' That might be the thought process. I think it's stupid, obviously," continued Guilbe.

Police are investigating whether these car break-in cases are related. There aren't any suspects at this time. If you know anything about these crimes, call Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
