Two dead after shooting at Naval Station Norfolk

A civilian shot and killed a sailor late Monday at Naval Station Norfolk before being killed by Naval security forces.

The Navy says the incident happened around 11:20 p.m. at Pier 1 on board USS MAHAN (DDG 72). No other injuries have been reported at this time.

According to Navy officials, the suspect confronted security at the Mahan's Quarterdeck, and a struggle started. During the struggle, the suspect grabbed a gun from the Petty Officer and shot a sailor that was trying to help security. Security forces then shot the suspect.

The suspect did not bring any weapons to the scene.

Naval Station Norfolk was put on lock for 45 minutes as a precaution. All operations are back to normal, except at Pier 1.
