Expansion plans are in the works for a Jackson County recreational complex. $2.5 million will be used to expand the boat docks at Goose Pond Colony.

The Scottsboro City Council voted Monday night to allow them to refinance their debt. Officials said they are trying to meet the demand of people wanting to rent out slips at the docks.

Officials with Goose Pond Colony said they are looking to build at least three more docks in the coming years, to house more than 40 boats. They will be constructed across a cove from the current boat slips near the marina.

General Manager Lyle Sosebee said over the years, the place has become a big attraction for boaters looking to relocate from other states. With a full marina, they are trying to create more room for new customers.

"A lot of people from the lower Midwest like to come to this marina, as well as from Florida. Many boaters are getting away from hurricanes and things, so they're moving up north and finding homes such as Goose Pond Colony to put their boats," Sosebee said.

The project won't be completed all at once; Sosebee said they will begin construction on a first dock and hope to have it completed by year's end.
