City of Savannah: Tree that fell was ours

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The city of Savannah is looking into how a massive tree toppled over on a car Tuesday at Pennsylvania Avenue and Henry Street in Savannah.

A woman and her newborn baby were inside the car when it happened. No injuries were reported but the two were taken to the hospital to be checked out.

After a thorough inspection, City of Savannah Public Information Officer, Brett Bell, said the tree is a Laurel Oak and it is a city tree.

The city inspected the tree and pruned it in December, and found it to be healthy at the base, according to Bell. When it fell Tuesday night is when the city learned it had internal decay halfway up the tree.

"We would have had to cut the tree in half to learn that," said Bell.

The city of Savannah has had several trees fall this week. However, the Laurel Oak that fell Tuesday is the only one to cause a safety concern.
