Jesup firefighter saves woman from burning home

JESUP, GA (WTOC) -

A Jesup firefighter is being hailed a hero after rescuing a woman who was trapped inside a burning home on Tuesday.

Lt. Josh Huffman was actually off-duty when he heard the call go out. He knew he was the closest and sprung into action.

"When the call came out it was just a structure fire with at least one person trapped inside the house," said Huffman. "What went through my head was, I need to get there and help her."

Huffman was listening to his own scanner and knew he could get there the fastest. He said he grabbed a shovel and broke a glass sliding door where she was trapped and rescued the woman.

It was thanks to the brave and swift response from Lt. Huffman that she is able to recover.

Huffman is modest about his bravery.

"It's just what all firefighters would do," he said.

He said firefighting has always been his calling.

"I love doing it. I don't see myself doing anything else."

The woman is being treated for her burns at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta. Huffman did suffer some minor burns himself, but he is already back fighting fires.
