PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

The Pascagoula School District is being spotlighted for making strides to better educate students, teachers and parents using different forms of technology and social media.

Pascagoula School District has been touted this month as one of just 10 communities worldwide using an innovative venture to get wireless connections. The project is called TV White Space.

"Where we can take advantage of analog space that has been vacated for the digital transitional television," said Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich.

Douglas Belk is the Director of Technology for the district. He helped build the tower unit for the special wireless services. Right now, it is being offered to students who may not have it and in rural areas.

"The wireless that most of us use, somebody is paying for it. With TV White Space, I would not say the word free, but it is available for people who apply and have a plan to use it at no cost other than what the equipment costs to get the transmissions done," said Belk.

Belk said the high-tech concept will definitely come in handy if a disaster disrupts wireless or Internet services.

"We will be able to bring up the generator, get the power necessary, be able to bring the communication up and be able to have instant access," said Belk.

District officials were also awarded this month for helping provide teachers across the state, as well as parents and students, with access to web resources for Common Core State Standards.

"The Governor's Award is an award we share with every school district in the State of Mississippi that is part of the Common Core Collaboration Group and the Common Core website," Rodolfich said.

The login process is simple.

"This requires a login with LinkedIn, but LinkedIn is free, so you can go in here and find resources, articles and conversations with other administrators and teachers about all things Common Core. Then we also have the Common Core Collaboration website at www.msccc.net. It is your one stop shop for any resource within the Common Core," Eva Harvell, Technology Instructional Specialist said.

District officials said they'll stay committed to find even more innovative ways for children to be competitive in the 21st century.
