Family Finance: Know your rights when a debt collector calls you

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

When you get a phone call from a bill collector asking you to settle your debt, you might wonder when a courtesy call crosses the line of harassment.

LaDonna Bohling, director of Call Center Operations with Contract Callers Inc., said if you get multiple phone calls at different times of the day or night, or calls violating a cease communication request, you could be a victim of harassment.

Bohling said there are a few guidelines to remember:

-Debt collectors cannot call you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m.

-If you tell them not to call you on your job, they can't.

-if you ask them to cease communication, they have to follow that.

"Answer the phone, talk to the collector, let them know about your circumstances. Open up and they'll put you on a payment plan based on your income and circumstances because all they want to do is resolve the debt," Bohling also said.
