BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A famous Biloxi palm tree that survived Hurricane Katrina, even while the house around it washed away, is now gone thanks to a chainsaw. The tree that once stood in the middle of the staircase at the Father Ryan House has been chopped down.

A WLOX viewer alerted us to the news Wednesday night. We went out to the property on Beach Boulevard in Biloxi and found it was true. All that remains of the palm tree is a stump on the vacant lot.

The palm tree used to stand directly in the staircase in front of the Father Ryan House Bed and Breakfast Inn. Built in 1841, the house was once the home of Father Abram Ryan, poet laureate of the Confederacy.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, until Hurricane Katrina wiped the house away, leaving only the tree. The house was never rebuilt, and now the famous palm is also gone. It was not immediately clear what plans the landowner has for the property.
