Fraudulent checks appear at 3 Statesboro banks

Statesboro police are investigating several fraudulent checks showing up Wednesday at three Statesboro banks.

Police got a call at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday from Farmers and Merchants Bank on Brannen Street of a person trying to cash a fraudulent check for over $1900. The suspect was gone by the time police arrived.

Police immediately alerted all banks in the area about incident and gave a description of the suspect. Then police received two reports of a suspect matching the same description with someone else who had cashed checks at two other local banks. The fraudulent checks that were cashed totaled over $9,000.

Statesboro police are looking to identify the two suspects. They're described as black males wearing bright yellow construction style vests.  The checks were fabricated to appear as being issued by two construction companies, one in Brooklet and one in Guyton.

Statesboro police also notified Chief Deputy Jared Akins of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office, who then alerted banks around the county of the incidents. The Bulloch-Statesboro Crime Suppression Team is currently assisting in the investigation.
