GSU students recycle bottles into greenhouse

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Dozens of Georgia Southern students teamed with the university's Center for Sustainability to build a truly green green house.

GSU senior Ashe Kelly came up with the idea.

"I saw this on the Internet and thought, 'other schools have done this, why not do it here?'" said Kelly.

Organizers said it shows how simple and practical recycling and re-using can be.

"This could easily be a family project, although it might take a while to collect 1,500 two-liter bottles of soda," noted grad assistant Christina Beslin.

They also liked that something that could hurt the environment as trash can help things grow.

"We throw away 32 million tons of plastic every year in the United States. We want to show people that it is, in fact, worth saving," explained the center's director, Dr. Lissa Leege.

The center will display the greenhouse next month for Earth Day and No Impact Week. After that, they'll donate it to Keep Bulloch Beautiful and their after-school gardening project for children.
