Legacy of former Savannah pastor recognized

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

First African Baptist Church celebrated the life and legacy of former pastor and father of the Civil Rights Movement in Savannah.

The church, located on Franklin Square, honored Reverend Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert, during the 10:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday morning.

Dr. Gilbert was the pastor of First African from 1939 until his death in 1956. He is recognized for his contributions to Savannah's Civil Rights Movement, including the reorganization of the Savannah branch of the NAACP, and convening the Georgia Conference of the NAACP. He is also recognized for launching black voter registration drives that changed the political landscape in Savannah.

Dr. Gilbert also played a key role with the Greenbriar Children's Center and the West Broad Street YMCA.
