EOA Offers Heating Help

You can't tell by recent weather, but winter will be here before you know it. Unfortunately, some people can't afford to turn on their heaters. Yesterday, the Economic Opportunity Authority helped residents aged 65 and older apply for assistance to help pay their home heating bills.

With fuel costs on the rise, program officials say it's a much needed service.

"It gives them a grant of money that kind of offsets what their heating costs are," said the group's Theodosia Johnston. "Heating bills have gone up tremendously and it's hard, especially for those on fixed incomes, to pay their heating bills. So in a way this helps."

The EOA will begin taking applications from low income families and the disabled starting December 1. The program will run as long as funds are available.
