CMPD: Man surrenders after barricading himself inside home

Police say a man who barricaded himself inside an Matthews home, prompting SWAT officers to take action, was taken into custody.

The call came in to officers around 8 a.m. about a disturbance where a man, who officials say has a long history of mental health issues, had made threats towards law enforcement.

When officers responded to the home on Gulfstream Court, the man barricaded himself inside.

Officials said there was no one else in the home at the time.

The SWAT team and negotiators responded to the home, set up a perimeter, and began negotiating with the man. Residents nearby were alerted to the situation.

"First of all I was kind of freaked out," said Jose Cunha, who lives nearby. "It's supposed to be a safe neighborhood and all that."

Cunha said he and other neighbors watched as the situation unfolded.

"I just saw police officers lining up in the street," said Chris Weitzel. "Full gear with helmets and assault rifles."

While Weitzel was looking on he said he heard a loud boom.

"It was a loud bang," he said. "I don't know if it was concussion grenades or a door going down."

Police did not comment on what the loud noise was but less than 15 minutes later SWAT teams emerged from the home with the man.

Police say the man surrendered and was taken into custody but not before he was taken to a mental health facility to receive treatment.

His name is not being released.
