Ogeechee Tech signs dual enrollment with high schools

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Students in public high schools in Bulloch, Evans, and Screven counties have a new option toward career paths.

Superintendents from the respective counties and leaders from Ogeechee Technical College signed an agreement for dual enrollment.

Under the agreement, Ogeechee Tech would offer courses on the high school campuses.

"These would be classes that could go toward their high school graduation, but also count here at Ogeechee Tech," explained OTC president Dr. Dawn Cartee.

The classes could be used toward certificate programs, such as a nursing assitant, that could help the students land jobs right out of high school.

"It's all about giving them options, and when they decide on an option, giving them a way to get there," added Charles Wilson, superintendent for Bulloch County Schools.

"Our career counseling starts now with first grade, said Dr. Joy Collins, Evans County's school superintendent. "Whether they go to a university, or don't, they need to have a plan."

Cartee said the program also increases the student's chance of graduating if they're considering dropping out of high school.

The program also allows Ogeechee Tech to tailor the courses offered based on student career interests and job skill needs of the local market.
