Stylists raise money for 3 year-old battling a brain tumor

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Hairstylists at Blonde, Inc. in Lee County are busy cutting hair for donations for a very special three year-old girl.

Meet Kenadie Parks, a camera loving, happy child who's fighting for her life. While she bounces around with a smile on her face, her parents know what she's battling inside.

"She was just uncoordinated and I took her to her pediatrician and she admitted us into Phoebe and the next day we got an MRI and we found out that she had a mass on her brain stem," said Jerrica Parks, Kenadie's mother.

Little Kenadie was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December, had surgery January 10th and 6 weeks of radiation.

"Doctors are amazed with her. She's doing a great job. She's doing awesome. It's hard to tell that she's even sick, so to speak, because every day she wakes up, she's smiling, she's happy. She doesn't have a bad day," said Parks.

Now the family is traveling to Atlanta every two weeks for chemotherapy for the next year and Jerrica Parks is without a job.

"I was terminated in January because I didn't qualify for the family medical leave act. So I'm currently searching for another job position," said Parks.

The stylists at Blonde Inc. wanted to hold a fundraiser April 1st to celebrate their first anniversary and decided Kenadie Parks was the perfect candidate.

"I was blessed to meet Kenadie a few weeks ago and she just melted my heart into pieces," said Regina Raburn, part-owner of Blonde, Inc. Salon and Nail Spa.

"It's truly a blessing to have genuine people from the community caring about our situation, our life and sharing this time with us, the journey. It's amazing," said Parks.

Doctors have given Kenadie 9 to 18 months to live, but the family is hoping for an amazing recovery.

"We're just hoping for a long life, that's it. You never think that it will be you. But it's humbling, because I see a lot of parents when we go to the doctor and we visit and I'm not the only one. I'm not anymore special than anyone else."

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
