Hardeeville teacher, minister cleared of assault

Posted: Updated:

Hardeeville Middle School Teacher, minister and former Jasper County Commission Chairman Samuel Gregory has been found not guilty of assault and battery on a student last year.

Gregory stood accused of third-degree assault and battery in front of Hardeeville Municipal Court in a 2013 incident. He'd been accused of punching a student who was being restrained by another teacher.

It took a jury about 15 minutes to find Gregory not guilty.

Gregory says he's just glad it's all over.

"It was an embarrassment to me, my fellow co-workers, my church members and everything else," he said.

Gregory has been on administrative leave since the charges were filed.

The Jasper County School District issued a statement Wednesday saying they welcome Gregory back to work. He's worked for the school district for nearly 30 years.

Gregory says he's ready to get back in the classroom.
