Nine people displaced after overnight house fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Investigators will be out first thing Friday morning to try and figure out what caused a late night house fire in Savannah.

Crews responded to the blaze at a quadplex (4 apartments) in the 200 block of West Park Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters say it started on the back porch of the quadplex with flames quickly spreading to the attic.

One resident says she woke up to a doorbell and smoke in her bedroom. A neighbor from across the street had run over to alert the residents by ringing the doorbell and screaming for all to get out. She then rushed to get all of the children out of the building.

Firefighters soon arrived and put out the blaze. All of the windows had to be busted out and the structure suffered heavy fire, water and smoke damage.

The Red Cross said that 4 apartment units were destroyed and a total of nine people were displaced by the fire. They are assisting those affected with funds for food, clothing and temporary shelter.

Roads around the scene had to be closed while crews battled the blaze, but all roads have since re-opened.

Police are patroling the area and have a portion around the fire scene roped off. Officials ask that you avoid the area Friday morning as an investigation into the cause gets underway.
