Feed the Hungry kicks off Operation Feed

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Feed the Hungry is kicking off a new initiative called Operation Feed, which is a series of food giveaway events. 

The focus is to take food directly into the communities where the working poor are. 

"What we found out is that we have food that we have been  giving at different functions but we got to spread the food around. Poverty is a reality and we got to be able to go to some of these communities where people might not have transportation or have a means to get the food," said Rev. Carl Gillard, CEO of Feed the Hungry.

The organization's first giveaway event started at 4 p.m. Friday at the Substainable Fellwood Homes Community Center at 40 Eagle St. in Savannah. Brown bags, free barbecue, music and door prizes are being given away.

Other events will take place at these times and locations: 

  • April 7 - Giveaway at the John S Deleware Center located at 35th and Lincoln Street at 1 p.m. This will continue every 1st and 3rd Monday at 1 p.m. 
  • Every 2nd and 4th Monday at the W.W. Law Center 909 East Bolton St. 
  • Every 1st and 3rd Friday at Substainable Fellwood Home, 40 Eagle St. at 4 p.m. 
  • 2nd Fridays at 4 p.m. at Madison Apts., 601 West 54th St. 
  • 4th Fridays at the St. Joseph/Candler African American Health Center at 4 p.m. 
  • 4th Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. at 2nd Bryan Baptist Church, 744 East Waldburg St. 
  • 3rd Saturdays at 11 a.m. at the Agape Life Center in Levi, SC.
