Ga. 2013 highway fatalities decline

Posted: Updated:

The number of fatalities on Georgia highways fell again in 2013, according to the state Department of Transportation and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, marking the 8th consecutive year of decline.

Officials said 1,186 people died as a result of crashes on state roads last year. That number is 13 less than in 2012.

The state attributes the reduction in deaths to road improvements like roundabout intersections, center median cable barriers, rumble strips, and more reflective signage and striping.

Final national fatality statistics for 2013 are not yet finalized; those numbers had increased 5 percent in 2012 to approximately 36,200 deaths.

Officials still show concern for bicyclists, which increased from 19 to 26 deaths, and pedestrians - up 11 for the year to 178.
